2011 saw Newport International Film Festival 2010 (held in 2011 due to programming issues) record its highest attendances ever, with over 75% of the film-makers in attendance, BAFTA CYMRU members and a lot of film-lovers packing into the Riverfront Cinema in Newport.
Being an independent film festival we were thrilled with the turn-out. So much hard work goes into setting up a festival and to have a sell out screening, as well as a packed awards ceremony and good turn outs for the other screenings, made it all worthwhile. We had people attend from Spain, Ireland and the USA.
The day before the festival we had the sad news of the passing of Margaret John who starred in the short film 'No More Milk'. (also starred in BBC2 comedy Gavin & Stacy) . Margaret's family allowed the film still to be shown and it went on to win The Welsh Dragon Award.
The Escort picked up two awards and this was the to be the last festival in which it was entered.
Best Short Film ' On the Edge' went down really well with the audience and was a bit of a shock win to Tom Day and the cast.
The beautiful film 'Astronauts, Vikings and Ghosts' won Best Documentary, while Best New Screenplay went to Christopher Bolton for 'Double Top'.
Our sponosors Quick Film Budget offered £200 in production software to two films that they felt showed real promise. This went to 'One Dark Night' and 'End of the Road'.
Risen won Best Feature Film to a sell out screening and took home 5 out of the 6 awards it was nominated for.
"Winning a Newport Film Festival award is a terrific career boost and spring board for any aspiring filmmaker or scriptwiter ".
