The Festival

The Newport International Film Festival is five years old and getting bigger each year! We're thriving on creating quality screenings for Independent films and this year is no exception! We've got some real gems for you!

This year we have films showing from around the globe, including some great new ones from upcoming Welsh talent!

There are a number of awards up for grabs at the Festival, including the prestigious Welsh Dragon Award for Achievement in Welsh Film on a Low Budget.

The festival prides itself on showing works that might not otherwise get seen, we're fiercely independent and helping to create more screenings each year!

MARY AND BILL

Director: Andrew Napier

Synopsis: A documentary following two elderly athletes, Mary Stroebe, a 90-year-old triathlete, and Bill Wambach, an 83-year-old high jumper. Mary has just broken her leg while down hill skiing and Bill, who smoked for 45 years, is recovering from a heart attack. Despite doctors’ orders, both decide to train and compete in their respective events. Mary hopes to complete the Lifetime Fitness triathlon and Bill will attempt to win 1st place and set the record for high jump at the National Senior Olympics. Through their amazing commitment, both Mary and Bill prove that age is just a number.

IN SUNSHINE OR IN SHADOW

THE QUIZMASTER

Synopsis: Bill is the Quizmaster. His hosting style has more in common with Hans Gruber than Bob Holness. No team has ever scored more than 38%, until one evening when he is pushed to the brink by a mysterious stranger, who seems to know all the answers, leading to a surreal battle of wills between the two men.

SUDDEN DEATH!

Synopsis: Los Angeles has been overtaken by a virus known as Sudden Death Syndrome, a disease that causes its victim to die suddenly and has only one symptom... spontaneously breaking into well-choreographed song and dance.

You do not need to go to Metropolitan Museum of Art to hear the instruments dating back thousands of years and you do not need to visit Brooklyn to hear the most unique collaborations, these things can all be found here.

THE GIN LADY

Synopsis: The Gin Lady provides a unique service for her clients; she smells their aroma and tells them exactly what they ate for their breakfast, lunch or tea. But when a young man calls, she smells something that's about to change both of their lives forever.

EVERYTHOUGHT

Director: Asif Bux

Run Time: 7 mins

Synopsis: A boy who is mistaken as a 'bad boy' a 'rude boy' he explains that you should never let anyone say no and always try regardless of what they think or say. He can't read music but enters a room dressed from his 'rude boy' image into a smart attire and plays on a piano from his heart, showing his emotion and expression through his thoughts.

HUNGER

Director: Daniel Chisholm

Synopsis: A 3-minute animated music video for the song 'Hunger' by the band Nathalie Jane. For the video, digital stills images of the band were animated to tell the story of Nathalie and her friends, using flash-backs and the latest in animation techniques.

Synopsis: A coruscating drama, based on an award winning novel, which explores the troubled relationships between the various members of an English family over a long summer when Eleanor, the stroke-afflicted old mother decides to give away her beautiful house in Provence to a New Age Foundation run by an Irish charlatan rather than to her own son and his young family. The story is told from the point-of-view firstly of Robert, an eight year old boy, then his increasingly drunken father, Patrick and also finally Mary, his long-suffering mother as they all struggle to come to terms with the loss of something they love desperately but increasingly realize will soon be gone forever. It is both a funny and moving tale of family discord.

Synopsis: If the mysterious plague sweeping the nation wasn't bad enough, Dean is still going ahead with his doomed wedding tomorrow morning. That leaves him with a choice. Pick up the button holes and chocolate fountain as instructed by bridezilla Elaine, or go with five mates (and a stripper) to play 'Zomball' at a top secret military compound where you get to shoot zombies with huge stun guns. Disobeying the golden rule of Zomball ('never never humiliate a zombie') the stags face overwhelming odds from the massed undead and each stag is hunted down. The truth about Zomball is finally revealed and suddenly the mother-in-law is the least of Dean's problems....

The festival comes to a close with ​the prestigious Awards ceremony! Below you'll find the nominee's that have been announced. Some awards are decided on the day by a judging panel, made up of three independent judges. All other awards are decided by the audience, on the day, via voting forms.
